Auto-Sync Setup

Configure automatic syncing of ChatGPT conversations to Notion on a schedule

Auto-Sync automatically backs up your latest ChatGPT conversations to Notion on a scheduled basis, ensuring your chat history is always up to date without manual intervention.

How Auto-Sync Works

Auto-Sync runs in the background and automatically syncs the latest 28 conversations from your ChatGPT history to Notion at your chosen interval. It uses your current page settings including:

  • Selected Notion database
  • Sync configuration (skip/overwrite/duplicate)
  • Skip synced records setting
  • Enhanced formatting preference

Prerequisites

  • Completed Notion authorization
  • A Notion database selected for storing conversations
  • ChatGPT page must be open in a browser tab
  • Extension options page must remain open for auto-sync to function

Enable Auto-Sync

Step 1: Access Auto-Sync Settings

  1. Open the extension options page
  2. Look for the Auto-Sync toggle in the header section
  3. Click the settings icon next to the toggle to open configuration

Important Requirements

Critical: Auto-sync only works when the extension options page is open. You must:

  1. Keep the options page open in a browser tab
  2. Keep a ChatGPT page open in another tab
  3. Do not close the browser or put your computer to sleep

If you close the options page, auto-sync will stop until you reopen it.

What Gets Synced

Auto-Sync automatically syncs:

  • Latest 28 conversations: The most recent chats from your ChatGPT history
  • Respects skip settings: If “Skip Synced Records” is enabled, already-synced conversations will be skipped
  • Uses current settings: All sync configurations from the main page apply

Auto-Sync does NOT sync:

  • Projects (use manual batch sync for projects)
  • Group chats (use manual batch sync for group chats)
  • Older conversations beyond the latest 28

Troubleshooting

Auto-sync not running:

  • Ensure the options page is open
  • Check that a ChatGPT page is open
  • Verify auto-sync is enabled in settings
  • Check the “Next Sync” time to confirm it’s scheduled

“ChatGPT page required” error:

  • Open https://chatgpt.com/ in a tab
  • Refresh the page
  • Auto-sync will resume at the next scheduled time

Sync failed:

  • Check your internet connection
  • Verify Notion database is still accessible
  • Review error messages in the results section
  • Failed items will be recorded in sync history

Computer went to sleep:

  • Auto-sync pauses when computer sleeps
  • It will resume at the next scheduled interval after waking
  • You may need to refresh the ChatGPT page

Best Practices

  1. Keep pages open: Pin the options page tab to prevent accidental closure
  2. Choose appropriate interval: Balance between freshness and system resources
  3. Enable skip mode: Prevents duplicate syncs and preserves your Notion edits
  4. Monitor regularly: Check sync history periodically to ensure everything is working
  5. Stable connection: Ensure reliable internet for consistent syncing

FAQ
