Downloading Individual Chats

Quick Start

After installing the extension, pin it to your browser toolbar for easy access. Click the puzzle piece icon, find ChatGPT to Obsidian, and click the pin icon.

Initial Setup

Complete this one-time configuration before downloading conversations.

Configure Download Folder

1. Click the extension icon in your browser toolbar
2. In the “Download Folder” field, enter your folder name (e.g., “obsidian”)
3. Files will be saved to Downloads/obsidian/

Choose Filename Pattern

Select how your files will be named:

• Current Date - Title: 2026-01-18-conversation-title.md
• Title - Current Date: conversation-title-2026-01-18.md
• Original Date - Title: Uses the conversation’s original date
• Title - Original Date: Title first with original date

Optional: Enable Image Download

Toggle “Download Images” ON to save DALL-E generated images to an images/ subfolder.

Downloading Conversations

You have multiple ways to download conversations:

Method 1: Download Entire Conversation (Quick)

1. Open any ChatGPT conversation
2. Click the extension icon in your browser toolbar
3. Click “Download as Markdown” button
4. The entire conversation will be downloaded to your configured folder

Method 2: Select Specific Messages

Select specific Q&A turns to download together:

1. Check the boxes next to the assistant responses you want to save
2. A floating “Export Selected” button appears at the bottom right
3. Click it to download all selected messages as one markdown file

The filename will include “-selected” to indicate it’s a partial conversation.

Method 3: Copy Individual Messages

Each assistant response has a “Copy” button:

1. Hover over any assistant response
2. Click the “Copy” button in the toolbar
3. The Q&A pair (your prompt + assistant response) is copied as markdown to your clipboard

Perfect for quick sharing or pasting into other documents.

Group Chat Support

For ChatGPT group chats (/gg/ URLs):

• Same download and selection mechanism
• Copy button available for each message
• Author names are preserved in the markdown

Importing to Obsidian

After downloading:

1. Open your file manager
2. Navigate to Downloads/obsidian/ (or your configured folder)
3. Move or copy the markdown files into your Obsidian vault
4. Open Obsidian to view your imported conversations

Tips

• Pin the extension for quick access
• Use “Select Multiple” for saving specific parts of long conversations
• Enable image download if you want to preserve DALL-E generated images
• Files are saved with clean markdown formatting ready for Obsidian

Troubleshooting

If download fails:

1. Ensure you’re on a ChatGPT conversation page
2. Check that your download folder is configured
3. Refresh the ChatGPT page
4. Reopen the extension popup
