Troubleshooting & FAQ

Common issues and solutions for Claude to Obsidian extension

Common Issues

Export Button Disabled

Symptoms: The “Save to Markdown” button is grayed out and cannot be clicked.

Solutions:

  1. Verify you’re on a Claude conversation page

    • URL should be https://claude.ai/chat/...
    • Not on the home page or settings page
  2. Check daily limit

    • Free users: 5 exports per day
    • Limit resets at midnight UTC
    • Consider upgrading for unlimited exports
  3. Refresh the page

    • Press F5 or Cmd/Ctrl + R
    • Wait for the page to fully load
    • Try the export button again
  4. Check extension status

    • Click the extension icon
    • Verify it shows “Ready to export”
    • If not, try reinstalling the extension

Files Not Downloading

Symptoms: Click export but no file appears in Downloads folder.

Solutions:

  1. Check browser download settings

    • Open Chrome Settings → Downloads
    • Verify “Ask where to save each file before downloading” setting
    • Check that downloads are not blocked
  2. Verify download folder path

    • Open extension popup
    • Check “Download Folder” field
    • Try leaving it empty (saves to root Downloads)
    • Avoid special characters in path
  3. Check browser permissions

    • Go to chrome://extensions/
    • Find Claude to Obsidian
    • Verify “Downloads” permission is enabled
  4. Check disk space

    • Ensure you have enough free disk space
    • Typical file size: 10-500 KB per conversation
  5. Try incognito mode

    • Open Claude in incognito window
    • Install extension in incognito (if allowed)
    • Try exporting again

Batch Export Fails

Symptoms: Batch export stops midway or shows errors.

Solutions:

  1. Ensure Claude.ai tab is open

    • Keep a Claude.ai tab active
    • Don’t close or navigate away during export
  2. Check internet connection

    • Stable connection required
    • Avoid VPN issues
    • Try again with better connection
  3. Reduce batch size

    • Export fewer conversations at once
    • Try 10-20 at a time instead of 100+
  4. Clear browser cache

    • Go to Chrome Settings → Privacy and security
    • Clear browsing data
    • Restart browser and try again
  5. Check for rate limiting

    • Wait a few minutes between large exports
    • Claude.ai may have rate limits

Formatting Issues

Symptoms: Exported Markdown looks wrong or broken.

Solutions:

  1. View in proper Markdown editor

    • Use Obsidian, VS Code, or Typora
    • Don’t use plain text editors
    • Verify Markdown rendering is enabled
  2. Check code block formatting

    • Code blocks should have language tags
    • Example: ```python
    • Obsidian should syntax-highlight automatically
  3. Verify frontmatter

    • Should be at the top of file
    • Enclosed in --- markers
    • Valid YAML format
  4. Check for special characters

    • Some characters may need escaping
    • Try re-exporting the conversation

Artifacts Not Exporting

Symptoms: Artifact content is missing from exported files.

Solutions:

  1. Verify artifacts exist

    • Check that the conversation actually has artifacts
    • Artifacts are code/documents created by Claude
  2. Re-export the conversation

    • Sometimes artifacts need a second export
    • Try refreshing the Claude page first
  3. Check artifact versions

    • All versions should be included
    • Look for “Artifacts” section in exported file
  4. Update extension

    • Check for extension updates
    • Reinstall if necessary

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Q: Is my data secure?

A: Yes. Everything happens locally in your browser. Files are saved directly to your Downloads folder. We never send your conversation data to any external servers. The extension only accesses Claude.ai pages to read conversation content.

Q: Do I need an API key?

A: No. The extension works directly with the Claude web interface. No API keys or additional authentication required beyond your Claude.ai login.

Q: Does it work offline?

A: Partially. You need internet to load Claude conversations, but once loaded, the export process works offline. Files are saved locally.

Q: Can I use it with Claude Pro?

A: Yes. The extension works with both free and Pro Claude accounts. All conversation types are supported.
