Custom Export Preview

Custom Export Preview lets you review a conversation before saving it to Notion. Instead of exporting the entire chat as-is, you can open a preview page, select only the messages you want, jump between turns, and then export a cleaner result.

This is especially useful for long conversations, research threads, or chats where only part of the exchange should be archived.

What Custom Export Preview Does

With Custom Export Preview, you can:

• Open a full conversation preview in a separate extension page
• Select all messages or only specific messages
• Keep only prompts, only responses, or a custom mix
• Review Markdown rendering before export
• Export selected content to Notion with progress feedback
• Reuse the same formatting settings already configured in the popup

When to Use It

Use Custom Export Preview when:

• A conversation is too long to save as one unfiltered page
• You only want the important parts of a chat
• You want to remove irrelevant replies before exporting
• You want to verify formatting before sending content to Notion
• You need a more deliberate export flow than one-click save

How to Open Custom Export Preview

1. Open a ChatGPT conversation in your browser
2. Click the ChatGPT to Notion extension icon
3. In the popup, find the action buttons in the “Ready to Save” section
4. Click Custom Export

The extension will:

• Fetch the current conversation details
• Build a local preview cache
• Open a dedicated preview page

How the Preview Page Works

The preview page is designed for fast navigation and selective export.

Top Bar Controls

At the top of the preview page, you can:

• Switch preview width between desktop, tablet, and mobile layouts
• Turn Show Chat Time on or off

Selection Menu

The bottom toolbar includes a selection menu that lets you:

• See a compact list of all messages in the current preview
• Jump directly to any message in the page
• Select or deselect any specific item
• Close the menu by clicking anywhere outside it

Bottom Toolbar

The toolbar at the bottom supports:

• All: Toggle between select all and clear all
• Only Prompts: Keep only user messages
• Only Responses: Keep only assistant messages
• Item Count: See how many messages are currently selected
• Save to Notion: Export the selected result

Floating Actions

On the right side of the preview page:

• Help opens the documentation overview
• Scroll to Top jumps back to the beginning of the preview

Export Progress

When exporting a long preview, the page shows progress status such as:

• splitting content into pages
• processing batch counts
• current Notion write progress

This helps confirm that export is still running, especially for large conversations.

Popup Settings That Are Reused

Custom Export Preview inherits the export-related settings already configured in the extension popup.

Enhanced Formatting

If Enhanced Formatting is enabled in the popup:

• Exported conversations use toggle-based organization in Notion
• Role labels such as You: and ChatGPT: remain inside the formatted structure

If it is disabled:

• Exported content uses a more direct block layout
• Role sections are easier to scan visually in Notion

Split into Multiple Pages

If Split into multiple pages is enabled in the popup:

• Large exports can be split into smaller Notion child pages
• The same message-per-page configuration is reused by Custom Export Preview

This helps avoid very large single-page exports and keeps Notion more stable for long conversations.

Long Conversation Reliability

For long exports, the extension applies pacing between Notion API writes to reduce temporary API failures during large batch operations.

In practice, this means:

• long previews are more stable to export
• large conversations are less likely to fail midway
• progress remains visible during export

Preview Cache Behavior

The extension stores preview data locally before export so the preview page can render quickly.

To avoid unnecessary storage growth:

• only the 5 most recent preview caches are kept
• older preview caches are removed automatically

Best Practices

To get the best results from Custom Export Preview:

1. Enable Enhanced Formatting if you want cleaner collapsible output in Notion
2. Enable Split into multiple pages for very long conversations
3. Use Only Responses when you only need final answers
4. Use the jump menu to review long previews quickly
5. Watch the export progress panel during large saves

Troubleshooting

Preview page does not open

Check the following:

• The current tab is a valid ChatGPT conversation page
• The ChatGPT tab has been refreshed after installing or updating the extension
• The extension still has access to the active tab

Export takes a long time

This is expected for large conversations. The extension may:

• split the content into multiple batches
• wait briefly between Notion API writes
• show progress messages while saving

Split page configuration seems wrong

Open the extension popup and verify:

• Split into multiple pages is enabled or disabled as intended
• the custom message count is correct

Custom Export Preview uses the popup settings at export time.
